May Schedule: Spring Allergies & Outdoor Injuries — Harmonia Clinic Is Here for You
Hello, and welcome back to Harmonia Clinic — your calm and caring healing space near Burquitlam Station in Port Moody.
May is finally here. The trails around Rocky Point Park and Buntzen Lake are alive with fresh green, the evenings are getting longer, and the whole Tri-Cities region seems to come back to life after the grey months of winter. With that shift in season comes a surge in outdoor activity — and, for many of our patients, a surge in the aches, pains, and allergy symptoms that follow.
Whatever is bringing you in this spring, we are here to help.

🌿 Who We Can Help This May
① Pain After a Hike, Workout, or Weekend Activity
The Tri-Cities area in May is irresistible for outdoor activity — Rocky Point Park, the Coquitlam River Trail, the Buntzen Lake loop, Mundy Park — and many of our patients arrive at this time of year having done far more physical activity than they have in months, with joints and muscles that are not quite ready for it.
The most common presentations we see in May:
Knee pain: Patellofemoral syndrome (runner's knee), IT band irritation, and medial knee pain are the classic presentations after a sudden return to hiking or running after a winter of reduced activity. The structures involved have lost some of their conditioning, and the abrupt load increase can irritate them significantly.
Ankle sprains and instability: Uneven trail surfaces catch people off guard, particularly early in the season when reaction time and proprioception have not yet recalibrated to outdoor terrain.
Low back pain: Spring gardening — bending, digging, carrying, sustained forward-flexed posture for hours — is one of the most common back-pain triggers we see from April through June. Cycling return and gym re-entry contribute as well.
Shoulder and elbow tendon irritation: The return of tennis, golf, badminton, and throwing sports after winter often overloads the rotator cuff and lateral elbow tendons in people who have not gradually rebuilt their capacity.
The sooner these issues are assessed and addressed, the shorter the recovery timeline tends to be. Acupuncture combined with targeted functional assessment and activity guidance is our standard pathway for musculoskeletal and sports injury care. Full details at our Musculoskeletal & Sports Injury Care page.
② Spring Allergy Season — Pollen Is Peaking
May is peak pollen season in Greater Vancouver. Birch and oak pollens typically peak in April and early May; grass pollens then take over and remain elevated through June and July. For allergy sufferers, this can mean months of uninterrupted sneezing, congestion, itchy eyes, and the general cognitive fog that comes with chronic allergic inflammation.
If you are taking antihistamines daily and still struggling — or if the drowsiness and brain fog from the medication are causing their own problems — a TCM-based approach can complement your existing management plan. Rather than simply blocking the histamine response, acupuncture and herbal support are used to reduce the immune system's overall reactivity and support recovery between exposures.

③ Visiting Family from Korea or Abroad
May is a popular time for family visits from Korea and other countries — the weather is finally mild, the city looks its best, and Vancouver is a natural destination for parents and relatives making long-awaited trips.
For many visiting family members, the long-haul flight, unfamiliar beds, dietary changes, and increased walking all combine to exacerbate existing musculoskeletal conditions — particularly low back pain, knee pain, and shoulder stiffness. Fatigue and disrupted sleep are also common in the first weeks.
At Harmonia Clinic, Dr. Yoon provides care in both Korean and English, so visiting relatives can explain their symptoms accurately and receive full, clear explanations of findings and treatment. We also provide thorough travel insurance documentation for out-of-country health claims, so that reimbursement can be pursued at home after the visit.

④ A Spring Reset: Weight Management and Overall Wellness
Warmer weather reliably inspires people to take stock of how they feel and make changes. If the winter has left you feeling sluggish, heavier than you would like, or simply low in energy, our K-Slim Korean Medicine Weight Management program offers a structured, constitution-based approach that focuses on metabolic balance, gut health, and overall vitality — rather than the restriction-and-rebound cycle of conventional dieting.
Spring is the ideal time to begin. With outdoor activity increasing naturally and motivation high, the conditions for sustainable change are genuinely better in May than almost any other time of year.
⑤ ICBC Recovery After a Spring MVA
Increased traffic, road construction, cyclists returning to the roads, and drivers distracted by the sudden brightness of spring afternoons all contribute to a real seasonal uptick in motor vehicle accidents. If you have been in an accident recently and are dealing with neck pain, low back pain, or the delayed-onset symptoms of whiplash, we provide ICBC-approved acupuncture and are familiar with the paperwork process.
See our ICBC Acupuncture & MVA Recovery page for details, or contact us directly.
💳 We Handle the Insurance Paperwork
Harmonia Clinic offers direct billing with most major extended health insurance providers. Rather than managing receipts and claim forms yourself, you simply show up for your appointment and focus on your recovery. We take care of the rest.
See our direct billing overview for a complete list of supported plans and details on how the process works.
